Navigating the Spring Clock Change

As the days grow longer and we prepare to set our clocks forward for daylight saving time, many parents worry about how the time change will affect their little one’s schedule. Babies often thrive on routine, so even an hour's shift can feel significant. But don’t worry! With some planning, you can make the transition smooth and stress-free.

Here are two effective methods to help your child adjust to the spring clock change.

Method 1: The Gradual Approach

If you prefer a gentle transition, consider shifting your baby's schedule in small increments leading up to the time change. Starting about a week before, adjust your baby’s routine by 15 minutes every two days, bringing everything earlier.

Example Gradual Approach Schedule for an 8-Month-Old:

Current Schedule

Days 1 - 2

Days 3 - 4

Days 5 - 6

Day 7 Aligned with the new time

7:00 AM - Wake-up

9:00 AM - Morning Nap

11:30 PM - Lunch

12:30 PM - Afternoon Nap

5:30 PM - Dinner

7:00 PM - Bedtime

6:45 AM - Wake-up

8:45 AM - Morning Nap

11:15 AM - Lunch

12:15 PM - Afternoon Nap

5:15 PM - Dinner

6:45 PM - Bedtime

6:30 AM - Wake-up

8:30 AM - Morning Nap

11:00 AM - Lunch

Noon - Afternoon Nap

5:00 PM - Dinner

6:30 PM - Bedtime

6:15 AM - Wake-up

8:15 AM - Morning Nap

10:45 AM - Lunch

11:45 AM - Afternoon Nap

4:45 PM - Dinner

6:15 PM - Bedtime

7:00 AM - Wake-up

9:00 AM - Morning Nap

11:30 - Lunch

12:30 PM - Afternoon Nap

5:30 PM - Dinner

7:00 PM - Bedtime

Please remember this is an example and not a schedule aligned with your baby's routine and sleep needs.

Benefits:

  • Minimises overtiredness by giving your baby time to adapt.

  • Easier to maintain consistent naps and meals.

  • Reduces fussiness and sleep disruptions.

Method 2: Cold Turkey Approach

If your baby adapts well to schedule changes or if you simply don’t have time to prepare, going ‘cold turkey’ can also work. On the day of the time change, follow the clock as if nothing happened. Adjust all activities to the new time immediately.

Example Cold Turkey Schedule for an 8-Month-Old:

  • 7:00 AM: Wake-up time (may feel like 6:00 AM initially)

  • 9:00 AM: Morning nap

  • Noon: Lunch

  • 12:30 PM: Afternoon nap

  • 5:30 PM: Dinner

  • 7:00 PM: Bedtime

Tips for Success:

  • Expose your baby to plenty of natural light during the day to help regulate their internal clock.

  • Keep bedtime routines calm and consistent.

  • Offer extra comfort if they seem a little unsettled.

Which Method is Best?

Every baby is different, so choose the approach that suits your family’s routine and your little one’s temperament. If your baby is sensitive to changes, the gradual method may be best. If they’re generally flexible, a cold turkey transition might work just fine.

Remember, it can take about a week for babies to fully adjust, no matter which method you choose. Be patient and keep routines as consistent as possible.

Happy spring, and good luck with the clock change!
